FRY'D N INDY, The continuation from 10/22 10/30/2007 6:07:02 AM Well I'm feeling like I can sit on my bum leg now long enough to type out the experience I had at TGI Fridays in Indianapolis on the Indy International airport side of town. Appreciate your waiting...(sciatica is a witch, but I'm beating it with a chiropractic broom) Even make plans to do one thing, and then something comes up to change your direction like an entire 180 degrees? How do you handle that?
My story that I started on 10/22 that got put on hold because of the death of my good friend Johnetta will finally, as my dear friend, be put to rest on these pages for all to wonder "what the heck is she talking about!?"
Fry'd N Indy...that could mean a lot of things. Fry'd about the traffic. Fry'd about the property taxes. Fry'd about the school closings, factory closings, political mayhem, you name it we've all been fry'd about something.
But getting to the point, a couple of weeks ago we were planning a trip to Kansas City, KS/MO to visit friends, relatives, create new business associates and write the whole thing off on our taxes. But one thing changed, one friend died, and one couple called Kenny & Cynth'ya had to change their entire getaway plans.
"How about Memphis?" I asked my huggable hubby of 3 decades. "We've never been there and hey, I think Elvis might be at the IHOP! Let's go follow the blue suede shoe tracks! Let's feed the duckies at the Peabody Hotel!"
But that last minute plan got whacked too. Our land line phone decided to venture its signal into parts unknown. We knew we paid the bill, and it took the phone folks (won't mention a name but it starts with "C" ends with "T" and has "o-m-c-a-s" in the middle......and after about 8 hours they finally fixed the line.
Okay, since it would take us about 7-8 hours to drive from Muncie to Memphis, and the phone got fixed at 1:30 pm.... oh well, kick the can on THAT trip.
Then Kenny said, "Let's check into the Hilton in Indy." So we got the travel agent discount that always saves us a ton of money, checked in, and started looking for trouble that wouldn't land us in jail at our age.
"Poetry Reading at the 'Write On Spot'?" Kenny asked.
"Nope," I said...cover charge is too high. (8 bucks per person....(shoot I can read poetry to my husband for free naked and get fringe benefits back at the Hilton.)
Then he said, "How about something to eat?"
"Cool" We'd been looking at homes in dream neighborhoods all day anyway, which is probably how I got my bum sciatica re-ignited.
So at 11 pm we ventured into TGI Fridays. And it was packed! We weren't the only night owls in that particular food joint in Indianapolis that night.
SOOOO, what to order? Hmmmm, Chocolate? Chocolate? Bueller?
I decided to eat healthy on a Friday night. Got a nice pasta dish with lots of lycopene loaded tomatoes.
DEE-lish! Kenny got a burger....again.
As we sit in new places of chow down late night delights, Kenny is always amazed as to how easily I fraternize with the staff. Always asking to see the manager and giving him a thumbs up when they might have seen the "New York bird flying north" --i.e. getting 'da finger' from someone they may have had to fire that day....I always tell them they do a great job.
As a result of the general manager's smile, whose name was Dick, (hey, clean your brain I thought Dick Van Dyke)Dick proceeds to tell me a victory story that's about to get me to shoutin'...
Then I asked, "Hey, what's up with these 'fried green beans and fried mac-n-cheese?...How y'all do that?"
Dick asked, "Wanna try some"?
Kenny gives me "that look." And to me, that look means, "Heck I'm goin' for it!"
YES! Bring on the samples.
So about 7 or 8 minutes later, we get two of what Indiana is known best for....if it can be fried, why mess with success?
Well, cutting to the chase the fried green beans were absolutely scrumptious! Lighted coated, still recognizable as a green bean, crunchy, light, not greasy at all.
"Dick these are pretty good!" (This fact was also confirmed by resident cardiologist Dr. Giaquinta--I think that's how you say his name--when Kenny got his annual heart check at Krannart Institute about 2 weeks after our "Fry'd" adventure at TGIF's---so Dr. Breall if you're reading this, you gotta not get mad at me because I allowed Kenny to try the fried mac 'n' cheese which he loved. (Hey, it was just a taste Doc!")
So what's the point of frying things that we don't necessarily dip into boiling transfat-free oil? I think it's kind of spiritual....with a human lesson of what can and can't be done in our lives.
You see, just because we're not used to someone looking or behaving or speaking a certain way does not mean that they lack delicious spiritual qualities.
Everyone of us lives those "Farris Bueller" moments. We want to venture from the mundane daily to the wacky unthinkable risky behavior.
In a lot of cases that could be life-threatening thinking. But in the case of taking something natural, like a green bean, that's known to show up in holiday casseroles covered with fried onion bits and coated with condensed mushroom soup and baked to a mushy consistency. Same-ol same ol'....right?
But think of it if our lives were like that fried green bean...think of doing something different with what you already know.
Change in life does not always have to be about new sexually satisfying positions or new clothing or new books or menopause or changing old furniture around in your residence.
Change in life can be using what we have in a whole new way, like that fried green bean. Nobody notices the bean unless it puts on a new look. That's what got my attention.
And it wasn't something that was scary. Shoot! Everyone in Indiana LOVES fried foods! And if you're a wannabe vegan like myself, if Dick showed me how it was done I'd replace my popcorn stash and snack on fried green beans watching my Tyler Perry collection, (which ain't much by hey I'm workin' on an entire Mabel "Madea" Simmons category.)
So all that was to say simply this...if there's something that is a regular event in your life, something that you want to put a different twist on that can bring a smile to someone else's face and create greater peace in your home, your workplace, your worship center, or even just for yourself, remember this....
If it can be fry'd N Indy, and turn out okay, try sprinkling a little cornmeal on your situation, take a dive in the hot oils of "why not" and experience something that can bring a new way of thinking about the same old "Bueller" existence for someone else to enjoy.
That's all....gonna rest my leg now.
Much love,
cynth'ya
