Poetry of Esther Parent Durocher: My Little Man

My great grandmother, Esther Parent Durocher, wrote a series of poems between 1912 and 1915 in a small journal that had been passed around in the Durocher family since the 1880s. My family was fortunate enough to preserve the journal and it came into my hands in the 1980s. These poems and other entries gave me great insight into Esther. She was a tiny, but determined woman who worked and supported her four children long before it was fashionable for women to work outside the home.
Her unpolished poems are interesting sketches into her thoughts just before her children came of age. This first poem written in the spring of 1912 shows her attachment to her youngest son, Gideon.
There is a man I dearly love
Straight from God's hand he came to me
So sweetly dependent, yet adorably bold
For this little man is but one year old.
To others this man may not be fair
He has no curls of sunny hair
His hair is brown and silky fine
And then you see, this man is mine
I was not in earnest, simply in jest
When I said "I liked blue eyes the best"
His eyes are dark, of midnight's hue
With imps of mischief peeping through
Oh sweetest comfort, purest joy
When my arms enfold my baby boy
To me, he's perfection when all is told
My little man, just one year old
