Poetry of Esther Parent Durocher: My Punishment

Esther concludes this small section of poetry with a prose piece dated August 5, 1916. My grandmother was 18 years old and only a couple of years from her own marriage. Esther's other children were also approaching adulthood.
You can feel her deciding to leave something behind and to continue with her life.
You are not sad when a butterfly has vanished.
It has gladdened your eyes for an instant.
You do not grieve when a rose has faded.
It's perfume has risen like incense to your nose.
Your heart does not ache when a song has ended.
You have known for a moment the sweetness of its melody
Why should you weep when I pass out of your life, loving you
Like the butterfly, the rose and the music
I have given you happiness, perfect though fleeting
For me, they have become nothing but a beautiful memory
