The Tao of Tsau: Common Sense, The Sequel
7/7/2010 5:04:38 PM
"Common sense is instinct; enough of it is genius."

Gary Klein often speaks about "training your intuition".  Most of us believe that people who have an uncanny knack for using intuition were born with it. Some of them were. However, most of them trained their brains to be tolerant of ambiguity.  That is they trained themselves to make decisions with less than ideal information.  Then they evaluated the results of those decisions until they could rely on their "gut feeling", instinct, or "common sense" in situations where there was neither time nor adequate information.

These people become powerful decision makers.  We see them every day in our firefighters, emergency room personnel and battle field commanders.  We see them in people who learn to "listen" to the voice that tells them that something is amiss even though the conscious brain has not caught up with the unconscious brain.

I come from a technical background with an overtrained left brain.  Many of us in technical disciplines have been instructed to find the one right answer or the one right way.  Unlike artists and musicians, we have not spent an equal amount of time training our right brain to be creative, to take leaps of faith based on our unconscious brain putting together correlations that seem right.  We perpetuate this training every time school systems reduce art and music classes as being softer and not as worthy of our attention.

If you begin perusing the Tao, you realize that Lao Tzu believed the key to a more successful life was to get in touch with your inner self.  Understaning the Tao allows you to get more in touch with that unconscious brain.  By doing so, you might just become bolder about relying on your innate intuition or common sense.
