When my father started suffering from Alzheimer's several years before he passed away, the thing I missed most was his wonderful sense of humor.  I seldom knew my father to frown or waste time feeling sorry for himself.  If I review more than 50 years of photographs, I don't believe I ever saw him without a smile even if the picture was a candid.

I grew up in an environment that encouraged looking at life with a sense of humor.  As a teen, I went through my phase of silly jokes ("How do you know an elephant has been in the refrigerator? Look for the footprints in the butter.) and can own up to a few practical jokes along the way.  However, as children and teens, we were never allowed to feel sorry for ourselves.  We were taught that it was better to laugh and smile through a situation than it was to agonize over the "what might have beens".

Along the way, I found out that it takes less energy to smile than to frown.  I can lower my blood pressure by laughing.  I generally feel better about situations and myself when I can find the humor in a situation.

As I reviewed the Tao, I did not find any verse that I could target as being related to having a sense of humor.  However, I would challenge you to try smiling and laughing through your challenging situations for a week. I can guarantee that you will feel better about yourself. In addition, your colleagues will feel better about you.
