It has been over two years now since I first published my novels. First, “Pretty and Nowhere to Go” and then “A Cottage in Another Country”. The third, “Deconstructing Connor”, came only after Hope finished editing it and I immediately read, sub-edit and published it. In less than three years, I have published three novels.
It was not that easy to accomplish that feat. I tried to find a publisher but none would take me. My impatience led me to publish them myself. And then the marketing of them was another challenge. I went to book clubs, libraries, and bookstores. I even sought help by the written press to highlight my books or feature them in book reviews. And to make it easier for my audience to have access to them, I made sure that they can be access by websites such as lulu.com; and be made available through e-books via kindle.com or nook.com.
But the hardest part of writing a book was conceptualizing it, seeing the characters weave their own lives and live through the breathing pages of each novel. Yes, as I read and re-read each page of each book, I re-live the lives of the characters. There was drama imbedded in them, the moving and feasting interactions of each player. It answered the why and how; while the what and when was mere statement of facts. Some scenes were advertently set not to be sequential. They traveled back and forth in time through dialogue and recollection. Some were juxtaposed to compare characters and that the reason for being, be more blatant, screaming at the top of their lungs that one character was completely different from the other. And still others were more sequential; not boring but still, sequential.
The language, oh the language, was so eloquent that each letter, word, syllable, sentence and paragraph dripped through the mouthful of luscious verbiage, like ice cream or melting chocolate. Am I shameless? No, I am not; for to know oneself and express them in the written word was doing no one a favor but hailing the Almighty for the gift I receive. Is Shakespeare shameless? Is Hemmingway shameless? I thought not! So, the language allowed each character to become engaging. It was the dynamic that moved the story.
But my stories were not Action or Suspense. They were not shallow exposition of some cheap comic book. They were a study of human characters given a situation, and how they thrive in that situation, how they pursued their agenda and how they succeeded or failed. They were like a river flowing into a bend of which we don’t know where it might lead. Sometimes the waters were fast and sometimes it slowed down to the mellowness of a night born with a whiff of a cool autumn breeze.
It is always my mistake of telling the end of the story. For to me, I would buy a book if I like the end of the story. So asking for the end of it is no big deal. But I know that to you, I would rather withhold them. So I must.
So why don’t you indulge in these books of mine? Come and be tempted by the language that drips like ice cream or chocolate. Weave through the stories along with the characters and discover them as they discover themselves. Follow my characters like nymphets trying to seduce you to some unknown only they could bring you. Yes, indeed, come along and live their lives.
