Old Friendships 1/7/2012 9:08:54 PM When did Bridget and Ryan become friends to me? How about Michael? Who did I become friends with, the oldest? You know, I met Ryan tonight, right after I had dinner at Pho Dalat, and we had a great conversation. It did not matter how silly or serious it was. We talked about Facebook and the blogs I posted on it; postings I also had at blogspot and authorsden. We talked about how to expand selling the books I had and the small minute details about book publishing. And for Bridget, she returned the book she borrowed from me, “Deconstructing Connor”. She said that she liked it but to me it did not matter whether she liked it or not. I didn’t know, nonetheless, if she really liked it or not for we are friends. True friends lie about those things anyways. Therefore, when I asked her if she liked it or not, it becomes a rhetorical question. I asked it because it seemed I had to.
They, Ryan and Bridget may not be my oldest friends but they count among the closest. I had close friends before but I can count them and they are far in between. And sometimes, my friends were living far away. Sometimes, these relationships I had will last only for a short while and the friendship will slowly dissipate into oblivion. Worse, strong friendships will turn to fierce enemies. And at times, friendships just disappear; yeah, I don’t know whatever happened to them or where they were.
With Ryan and Bridget, I still remember them that night I was hanging out at Greater Trumps. They were this hippie couple out on a date. So on their date, they played cribbage. (On Trivia Night when they were playing, they at the same time played cribbage that they or Michael hit skunk, thus, the name of our team in Trivia Nights). The also had beer and smoked. During those times, you could still smoke inside the establishment. Bridget was in her dreadlocks with an orange cap, her boots and loose fitting clothes with a belt to accentuate it. Ryan was dressed in his normal garb – hippie-ish with long hair and a goatee that was longer than a goat’s goatee. I was writing on my journal about that great American novel right at the long table facing them. Michael soon invited me into the game and our friendship flourished.
At that time also I still lived in the Bay Area and traveling to Portland to check on my house. They were the only friends who would call me in the Bay Area to see how I was doing. They were making sure that I was alright, that was if I hadn’t been to Portland for quite some time.
Today, Ryan was still this hippie dude while Bridget had shed her dreadlocks and cut her hair. She still sports the boots but her outfit was now stylish. They traveled quite a bit to Lake Tahoe, Southern and Northern California and Mexico. Previously, Bridget grew up in Switzerland and traveled to Europe and Africa. Ryan traveled to the Caribbean and Europe.
Oh what were old friendships? To me, Bridget and Ryan were the epitome of old friendship. They were not just good friends but friends wherein in good weather or bad, they remain friends. Yeah, Ryan and Bridget…
