Windy Portland 2/9/2012 10:09:12 PM Whish! The day was sunny but very, very windy. Each night I come home, I’m worried about my tall pine tree. I have two of them plus a broad leaf maple tree. But I am very worried by this tall pine tree. This morning, when the sun peeped through the branches, I covered the sun’s rays with one hand and observed the entire tree swaying in the wind. When I bought the house, I fell in love with these trees thinking that the place has ambience. It was good to have the trees there. But I did not think that I’d be worried about it now. I didn’t want to cut down the trees like my customers in Costco would. I think that it will be sacrilegious to do so. Maybe if I trimmed the top-most of that tree, it would be a better compromise.
I didn’t experienced high winds before up until I lived in Oregon. I was at Crown Point, several years ago and boy, the wind was blowing. It was not that hard, the blowing I mean but still, the intensity was harsh. (Crown Point is a location sitting on the ridge that has the magnificent views of the Columbia River Gorge.) I once had an appointment in the area (that was when I was in sales.) Half of every pine tree was shaven. You can see remnants of the torn off branches lying on the ground. I never realized it until I was shown it by the owner. It was also at Crown Point that I saw a weather caster tumbling in the wind. The wind was blowing gale force even though there was no storm. One man was holding that woman down and still she started to be taken by the wind.
There are places in the United States that are windy. Chicago is one of them, although Chicago is just the 10th windiest city. The tall buildings are the cause of the wind. The wind is funneled through this long avenues lined up with these tall buildings and there you are, wind is compressed into these narrow ways. On the top of ridges, by the Columbia Gorge is also a source of wind. That is why there are wind farms there. The turbines churn and thanks to the wind, power is produced.
I live in the Northeast quadrant of the city of Portland, and it is near the Columbia Gorge. That is why the wind is strongest near my place. I somehow wonder how it is in downtown? I suppose it is not that windy, at least when compared to my quadrant. Not that it howls in downtown, but you still can feel the wind.
Well back to my tall pine tree. It has been four days now that the wind blows. I didn’t feel its effect when I’m inside my home. But when I go out, then I certainly can. My tall pine tree, what is there to do?
I like wind. Wind is good. But to have wind this strong is something else. But why should I complain, for today it’s sunny, ain’t it?
