Life is about change-Grandfather married again
11/16/2011 1:20:51 PM
The last years at Oakdale: Life on Oakdale was a huge learning experience for living on the land, almost a pioneer existence to begin with; but life is all about change and my journey in rural Queensland had many more miles on its agenda.

When Rob’s parents wished to retire theproperty was valued and we bought it with the help of the banks. Rob’s parentsremained in their home. I was so grateful for their help with the children, andGrandfather George at the age of seventy was still as agile as ever on the backof a horse and would help with the cattle, taking the older boys with him on amuster of the big paddock. Grandma Emily adored the new baby and he toddledover to Grandma’s house at an early age, taking his daytime sleep with her asshe rested on her couch. She was not in good health and died of kidney failurewhen our youngest was only four years old. We all got though the deep hole ofsadness somehow with Grandfather George in a desolate state. He remarried twoyears later to a lady he had known all his life and they shifted to Nanango toretire properly where his wife Marian would be closer to her daughters, aboutan hour’s drive away.  It was the panaceafor George’s terrible loneliness and the union worked beautifully. I havealways believed that remarriage later in life is actually a compliment to marriage.  They were together for fourteen years andthey were happy years.

Continuing the last years at Oakdale tomorrow.
