Why 4/18/2011 12:02:26 PM Recently, HGRB Services has stepped up it's efforts to have each state represented by an associate volunteer to assist in lightening its load of responding to homeowners and homerenters in his/her respective state. A leading reason for most rip offs and scams occurring among our home dwellers in the U.S. is a lack of information. When people are uninformed about the slew of devises used to con them out of money, they're more susceptible to being ensnared by them.
Recently, a contractor was sentenced in Saratoga County, NY for mercilessly scamming several senior citizens out of an estimated $ 14,000.00 (Friday, April 15, 2011).
The contractor "Mr. Fischer" (pseudonym) would bid out his contract labor for variations of home maintenance and improvement projects.
According to reports, all his victims were in their 70's.
I remember discussing these sort of things with one of the elders of our church. His response was something to this effect:
" Yeah....and, that's because they're from a time when a man's word was his bond. So, they just trusted him to keep his word."
I concur that we human beings have very strong tendencies toward being psychologically "stuck" in the past, in spite of all these present contradictions.
The contractor, in question [Mr. Fischer] was paid up front for doing work he never got around to.
Now, we can't say, with any degree of creedence, that the senior victims didn't know better. Of course, they did. But, irrespective of that, they apparently weren't prepared to resist paying. They weren't prepared not to listen. They captitulated because they seemingly had no system in place to prevent them from so doing.
The contractor was sentenced to 4-8 years in prison, and given a 10-year window in which to repay his victims. 10 years, huh? These people need their money, NOW.
But no, let's just pay for more missles and bombs, and troop to invade foreign countries under the guise of helping those people obtain freedom and justice, while we ignore the freedoms and justices of our own senior citizens...and,offer 10-year repayment plans for those who ripped them off!
Since our own government's consumer information reach on addressing matters of home maintenance and improvement fraud is stretched to its budget-constrained limits , we've got to step in. Our home dwellers remain critically deficient in knowing how to stave off scam and rip off ..... effectively.
There must be people on the ground in every state, setting up online networks, knocking on doors, supporting workshops, and informing our homeowners and homerenters on ways and means to avoid and to fight back this tide of predatory people.
Why "Team Work National...???" Why not?
Please, log into our support network, and see what you can do to volunteer your talents to a worthy cause:
