Top Three Reasons why you Should Persevere 7/12/2012 7:01:22 AM
What is your dream? Do you want to be a singer, writer, professional baseball player? My dream was to become a champion horseback rider. You’re probably thinking anyone can do that, right? In most cases, that could be true. But, there was a little obstacle for me to overcome. I was born with cerebral palsy, which meant I didn’t start to walk until I was about four years old. In fact, doctors predicted that I would never walk. That was something my dad wouldn’t accept. He decided to teach me to ride horses. It changed my whole life and I’m so grateful that things went in that direction. I would urge anyone to follow their dreams. Here’s the reasoning behind that philosophy:
• If you want something badly, but you give up, what will the result be?
The only outcome will be failure! You could be just steps away from reaching your goal when you decide to quit. You’ll never know unless you keep striving toward it.
• Imagine how amazing you’ll feel when your dream becomes reality:
When I was learning to ride and jump horses, there were days when I fell off repeatedly. It was really discouraging, but no one in my family ever quits. In fact our motto was, “The Humphrys don’t give up.” I certainly didn’t want to be the one to break the tradition. I kept imagining how it would be when I succeeded.
• You’ll have experiences you never imagined if you persevere:
Let’s say you keep trying, even on days when it would be tempting to quit. Once you reach your goal, you’ll experience amazing things. For example, had I given up in my quest to become a champion, I never would have met my gifted, special, horse, Fleet Nancy. We became a winning team. Many times we were judged to be the best in our class. When you realize your dream, it’s worth the effort and it makes the moment even more memorable because it was a challenging journey.
