I wrote this a long time ago but never posted it.
Still stunned by this interesting world.
With a little bit of reasoning it is difficult for me to even comprehend that there is anything to discuss in regards to gay marriage.
There are now and have always been gays among us, just as there are now and have always been heterosexuals among us.
Relationships offer our greatest potential for growth and happiness. I know I feel so fortunate to have been raised by married parents devoted to each other and have always aspired to marriage myself.
While the infidelity and promiscuity of politicians and other famous heterosexuals seems to be almost a national sport, the gay community has expressed that many of its members wish to settle down in the monogamous relationship of marriage.
For whatever reason heterosexuals in power seek to monopolize their healthy lifestyle and not allow those members of our human family who happen to be gay to be able to express their love for one another and aspire to monogamous relationships in marriage.
The heterosexuals seek to be the only members of our society who can live in marriage in spite of their celebrated failure rate near 50%.
It is difficult for me to comprehend why one group of people would try to hoard a way of life which they believe is beneficial and deny the benefits of such a lifestyle to other members of our human family.
The opposition as most often is the case comes from those of a religious background with appeals to ancient human literature. A few rare select passages of the Bible get brought to attention.
I find the stories about relationships in the Bible are often so foreign to me I would prefer they not be read. But I have no need for concern. People do not read the Bible or they too would distance themselves from the material it contains.
I wish to sight just one example. In the book of Judges, Chapters 14 and 15 we are given episodes in the life of Sampson. Sampson and the manner in which his relationships are carried out are never criticized in these passages. One can tell the normal standards and procedures of the day are being carried out, but they would not be proper in today’s world.
Sampson comes upon a beautiful woman and he is obviously really interested in her. The Bible says he finds her pleasing. Imagine what a man might do today under those circumstances. But what Sampson does is report his interest in that woman to his parents and request they get her for him. This was before the birth of Christ, but he makes quite the Christmas list. So the parents get her and he now has a wife. But this wife seems to still live with her father. Sampson goes to her- wanting to go into her chambers, clearly wanting sexual relations, but he finds that his father in law thought Sampson wasn’t so fond of her and gave her to one of Sampson’s friends. The father tries to entice Sampson with a younger daughter who he describes as “Prettier.” This Bible story hardly appeals to any honor in marriage. There is no moral encouragement. It will never make it into our Valentine’s cards.
To continue with our Bible story- Sampson does seem to have been fond of that woman- for he becomes enraged against her father. But he reveals himself to be racist by taking it out on the Philistines of that time. He catches 300 foxes, makes fox torches out of them and burns the crops of the Philistines.
Read today this story has all the veracity and inspiration of e-mail spam. Nobody reads this or shares it, but it exists in the same material being used as source material for discussions about gay marriage.
All I can say is this is an interesting world. I do hope we learn to be kind to one another and share helpful ways of keeping us together and finding happiness.
