Fighting CPS 9/19/2011 11:29:29 AM This blog will provide updates to cases reported in Part II of my book, Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 978-0-9800061-6-2. Some of these cases had not been resolved when the book went to press. It will also report new similar cases that author Deborah K. Frontiera has come into contact with from people who wish to share their experiences. Child Protective Services in any state has a difficult job to do. No doubt about that! It’s just that in many cases, if one were to give them a “grade” for how the job was done, it would be a failing grade, or close to it. During my teaching career, I had to evaluate my students constantly, and I was evaluated by my superiors on a regular basis. My school was evaluated by the district and by the state every year for its over-all performance in putting out students who knew at least the state-mandated minimum requirements. But there is no real over-sight agency with any teeth to enforce anything (at least in Texas) evaluating the job results of CPS.
My book, Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges (ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) is an expose on the failure of CPS in Texas and includes cases from other states as well. My grade for the agency: FAILING
Failing not only children who are left in abusive homes—sometimes to their deaths—but also failing when they assume guilt, never properly investigate the possibility of innocence, and persecute families where no abuse took place.
The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done.
Hopefully, my readers will act by writing letters to their state government and national representatives and put pressure on those parties to change laws so that conditions will improve for ALL children and families. Perhaps there will be some who will act even more bravely, forming groups such as attorney Randy Burton’s Justice for Children. Maybe one of those groups will find an attorney, or a group of them, willing to sue the State of Texas, or some other state in desperate need of an overhaul, so that something positive for children and families can happen.
On pages 237-241 of Fighting CPS, I printed an interview with Linda Sanchez, Caseworker Supervisor for Good Will Farms, a private foster care agency in the State of Michigan. I had lunch with Linda in late July 2011 to give her a “thank you” copy (from advance copies of the book available to me for gifts and promotion) and am happy to report that she is still on the job advocating for children in her area. In the original interview, she stated that conditions for children (while not perfect) were much better than they had been before a group successfully sued the State of Michigan over the deaths of some children while in foster care. Since the interview, conditions have continued to improve in most parts of that state. It’s truly a treat to be able to report positive news.
