Fighting CPS 10/17/2011 9:49:05 AM The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Occasionally, I will report helpful tips and web sites with advice on fighting CPS. This is one of those weeks I would like to provide helpful information to people who may be fighting Child Protective Services. A very good web site is:
www.fightingcps.com
This site’s purpose is to help people learn enough about the law that they may be able to defend themselves against CPS allegations against them. The site features FAQs and what to do if you are being investigated. There are links to find lawyers, notes on keeping a case notebook so you can be organized in your approach. There is a legal document library, and helpful notes about what to do if CPS is asking you to do things that are NOT court ordered and how to file for an administrative hearing.
The site does state clearly that their purpose is to educate and they stress that they are NOT lawyers. Such a disclaimer is, of course, very important for the organization running the web site. However, it is a great place to learn what to expect and what to do should you, or someone you know, ever be accused of child abuse/neglect. For any family going through such an experience, it’s good to know there is help out there and you are not alone. For families who have never been accused, it’s good to know where to turn should the need ever arise, although this writer hopes her readers never need to use it.
It’s like insurance—you know you must have it, but hope you never need to file a claim.
