Listening to and contemplating this beautiful voice lost to cancer, I was inspired to write something in her honour.
Eva Cassidy’s Beauty Lives On!
Two of the most beautiful songs in my music library are Eva Cassidy’s versions of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, and “Fields Of Gold”. While I listen to her music so often, I was oblivious to the fact that this beautiful voice was silenced by cancer in 1996. She was only 33 years old at the time – and at the height of her career. In reading her biography I found out that she was painfully shy and reticent about sharing her gift in public performances; She preferred to let her light shine in the background – giving off beautiful reflections onto the performances of other artists. Finally, those reflections became so powerful that her talent was forced to uncover its face – a beautiful, humble face that has finally taken its proper place in the golden fields of music that she loved so much. A visit to her website revealed a multi-talented artist who’s accomplishments in art, crafts, and music are absolutely amazing. She accomplished so much in her short lifetime, and maintained throughout it all – her personal moral integrity. She let all of the attention, that finally came her way, shine on her ‘gift’ and that gift continues to inspire. As I place my donation in the ‘Cancer Research’ envelope, I whisper: “Thank you to all of the Eva’s!”
