Talking To My Plants!
Actually, they’re not my plants – they belong to all of us. I haven’t gotten around to acquiring any houseplants of my own since our move; (Did I just hear a collective whew! from the African violet bleachers in town?) No – the plants I’m referring to are all of those beautiful residents, big and small, from the crocuses peeking out of the soil to the graceful budding branches of the maple and oak trees outside my window. As I complain about my problems, I’m sure I heard their collective exasperated cry: “You think you have problems? Ok, maybe you do, but just take a listen to my play list: I have to endure watching humans throwing garbage of all manner onto the soil, into the water, the air, and into themselves; without being able to offer any advice, consolation, or to voice any indignation. I would like to tell them to look around, and above themselves, to listen closely, and to really SEE US! How would they like to be in our roots? How frustrating it would be for them to have their beautiful thoughts, but no voice!”
I wonder if the trees, while observing our beauty, are at the same time crying for us; for while we are the guardians of our joint environment, to a large extent, we seem to be unaware of the role that every one of our actions plays; Perhaps if I stop looking around at them, and listen more closely to what that rustling sound is trying to tell me; spend more time really observing them, and the effect that my actions are having on them; some of those seeds of wisdom might just plant themselves into my words and grow with my small steps.
Note to my plants: I promise to really see you, and to listen to the voice breathing through your branches, reminding me that I have a role to play; I have a voice, and I have mobility - and on that ‘note’, I will be using that mobility and voice to head out to the election polls on May 2nd.
Oh - and a warning to the bedding plant community – I’m coming to get you! You’re on my play list - I hope you don’t mind my voice on yours – I tend to sing as I water!
