The smell of a river can evoke wonderful memories, inspiration, and its own special wisdom.
Something Fishy In The Air!
I stopped still and breathed in deeply – Ahhhhh! Out on my walk with my husband yesterday, we hit a stretch of road directly beside the river, and that unmistakable smell filled my nostrils: freshness, with a hint of algae, and just a touch of fishiness – Wonderful!
The smell of a river is unlike any other – It has ingested so much debris, yet still seems to blend it all together and come up with a scent that evokes pleasure, nostalgia, peace, and that unquenchable thirst for childhood discovery! It’s as if it says: bring it on! I’ll take care of all of that garbage – and throw in those mental clogs as well!
I wish that I could bottle up that scent and let it loose in my office; I have never yet smelled any artificial deodorizer that comes close to a ‘brook in a breeze’. And it would come with no ‘best before’ date on it: A river seems to always be on the‘giving’end, even though, I’m sure, it is disappointed with the gifts that it receives in return: used cans, crumpled newspapers, candy wrappers, coffee cups, water bottles, and old tires. We mistakenly think that it is a super hero that can handle anything. I’m not sure how much longer it will graciously go on transforming our errors - spinning gold out of debris.
As one of my own mental clogs cleared, I realized that the river was telling me something else as well: that our internal rivers are going through the same gift-giving/receiving scenario: We keep throwing junk into it thinking that it can handle one more donut or a few more pounds of fried whatever. A little more fish would be a good option – as long as the river still has them to give.
I think I need to go back to the river and inhale once more;
I can hear it calling to me: “Come on down – The algae is on, the breeze is up, and there’s something fishy in the air” – Thank goodness!
