Have you noticed the term ‘greedy rich Republicans’ lately? And, that theme grows stronger as the president continues to promote his class warfare plan to get re-elected, and perhaps even beyond that. He has plenty of time to lay the ground-work to have himself elected president-for-life. The stronger he plays the theme ‘greedy rich Republicans’ the more votes he gets from people who want more for doing less. There are many of them, and their numbers continue to grow. Those greedy rich Republicans should give them part of their money!
In my early years I was part of a dirt-scratching Democrat family, helping scratch out a living on a 5-acre cotton farm in the dirt-poor red clay hills of central Mississippi. The week before I graduated high school, in 1957, I was following behind a mule pulling a turning plow in that cotton field. I felt as a Democrat, “I work hard and have nothing.” I remember having the thought, ‘The government should take all the money in the country and share it equally among all citizens, so everybody could get their fair share.’
What an awakening I had after I joined the Air Force, immediately after graduating high school - and I was the first in my extended family to graduate high school. That awakening was that if you wanted to have something, you have to decide what it is, and how to get there to earn it. Success is not something you choose off a silver platter. The military instilled that idea: life is not a free lunch - do something for yourself and your country and you will be rewarded with something, even if it’s nothing more than love of country and pride of achievement. This is the concept that drives military people to earn medals. My aspiration when I enlisted was probably to retire from the military as an E-5.
I was working as a medic, as an E-2, when a nurse officer, Major Constance Ziemba, told me to sign up for college courses at the base education office. That was long ago, but I think her exact words were, “Clark, get your young ass over to the education center and take some college courses.” That created a major dilemma. I knew I was a Mississippi kid not smart enough to pass college courses; and this officer had told me to do something that I couldn’t refuse to do. Of course, I signed up for college.
After I had two years of college, night school and correspondence courses, new aspirations opened up for me. That’s when I threw the ‘silver platter’ concept out the window. I realized success was by doing it, not by waiting and hoping for it, or asking for a fair share. I felt I could maybe even become an Air Force officer. After twice failing the Officer Candidate School qualifying test, I finally passed it the third time - after having a year to study more between each test cycle. I passed the test just in time to be accepted into the last class of Air Force Officer Candidate School, graduating in June, 1963. I finished my degree at the University of Nebraska, in 1972, and retired as a major in 1978.
Now, back to the point of Democrats and Republicans. I am a proud Republican, and I am not rich or greedy. What little I have I happily share when anyone asks, even poor Democrats who think the silver platter is there to choose from. From the perspective of unawareness of how to succeed, I once was that Democrat. Having gone through the process, success is simple. The most difficult parts are deciding exactly what to do, and taking the positive first step to do it.
Sitting on the sidelines, blaming rich greedy Republicans for one’s failure, will solve nothing other than to perpetuate class warfare which will result in an insincere government. I will also admit that all Democrats are not lazy and worthless. Many just don’t have a Major Ziemba to tell them exactly what to do to succeed. They don’t know how, because they are from an environment that has not experienced it - just as I was.
