What's a Writer to Do?

On finding readers
Do blogs help bring a writer new readers? The only way I'd know for sure is to have everyone reading this drop me a note and let me know (http://www.doriengrey.net ....if Authorsden will allow links; Amazon does not). Of course, that's a lot for me to ask, but like Blanche DuBois, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.
But the fact remains that the writer's greatest challenge...other than writing, of course...is to find people to read what we've written. Otherwise, we might as well sit on the beach with a stick and write our books in the sand.
And, of course, every minute we spend playing peacock to attract potential readers is a minute we aren't spending writing. All very convoluted and confusing, I fear.
So, without large advertising budgets--all right, without ANY advertising budget, just how can a writer hope to get new readers? Without a doubt, the very best form of free advertising happens every time you recommend a book to a friend. (The question of exactly how you found the book in the first place brings us back to the subject at hand.)
This particular writer (let's call him "me") has a website already mentioned above (http://www.doriengrey.net in case you missed it). I have about 10 pages of references on Google and other search engines. I belong to quite a few on-line writers/readers chat lines (I might recommend you check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gaywritersreaders : it's a great place to exchange ideas and opinions on gay writers and gay writing), but many of these groups are a bit like preaching to the choir. I have a listing, including a blog, on Amazon Connect (just go to Amazon, type in "Dorien Grey" and pick one of my books, then scroll to the bottom of the page). And then, of course, there's Authorsden, where we are right now--and I very much appreciate your reading this.
But let's face it, everything boils down to just one person: you! How can I possibly convince you to read my books (at least one...once you've done that, I'm confident you'll want to read the others)? I already offer a drawing on my website (did I mention it was http://www.doriengrey.net?) for a free autographed copy of any of my books...you can't get much better than "free." And even if you don't win a copy the first time you enter, you can enter once a month. You can also read the first chapter of any of the books on the site.
Okay...so what more can I do? I'm open to any suggestion, and will appreciate your help.
