Slow and Steady Wins the Race 9/9/2012 10:08:06 AM A summary of my writing career. Life gets in the way of writing...but life and people are more important! I think I was reminded of this saying in my first grade class this past week. Sometimes I learn as much as the first graders that I volunteer to work with do!
The story of the Tortoise and the Hare was being reviewed. This week, while I was trying to get work done, assignments written, more chapters to my novel added, besides everyday life, I started to feel frazzled. What was I doing? Was the benefits worth the efforts? I love my volunteer work at Hope Academy and I write to bring in extra money to help us out during this terrible economic slump, and I really like to write books.
Instead of getting down about not getting enough done, I decided to take the slow and steady approach. I would much rather write then to do promotion work, but both must be done. Sometimes I need a little nudging, prodding, ok, just plain push to get going again. Stop worrying about how much there is to do, instead, work steady on one task until its completed, then go on to another. I'm learning to not to concentrate so hard on any one aspect of my writing that I lose track of everything else.
Slow and steady wins the race. So, even though I am slowly doing everything that needs to be done, I am steadily gaining ground on my goals. It wasn't the rabbit that jumped around, took naps, flitted around with no direction that won that race. The plodding turtle, he just kept going, slowly but surely towards his goals.
You also have to be able to live your life. Spend time with family, do things you love, read a good book, and even play games if you want. I don't want to get to the end of my life and regret things I didn't do. Nor do I want to look at my life now and long for things I know I can't do or get done. I want to be at peace with where I am in my life, live fully and keep a steady pace toward my goal.
