Hard Writing Blogs at Christmas Time

What subject do you choose?
This is the time of year, needless to say, when the world is aglow with thoughts of the holidays ahead. Families gathering for their perhaps once a year tradition of holiday celebrations. Children in awe at the goodies that Santa left them. Adults scurrying about for those last few gifts that slipped their minds earlier. A joyful time for all. Right? Perhaps not.
Reading the papers and watching TV news segments brings about thoughts of reality that all is not right in the world and those celebrations are a bit jaded around the edges.
I see multiple stories of food banks in multiple states running short of the necessities that many of our poor depend on at Christmas time. There's no longer enough food to go around, even with large companies and food chains donating truck loads of food. The reason: There are more underpriviliged this year who require donations to make it through the holidays; to put food on their tables. Most of the growing numbers of underpriviliged are in that state due to losses of jobs, a high unemployment rate, the fact that most states are running out of money to pay the unemployed, losses of homes through foreclosure, leaving nothing but despair in the hearts of too many.
Another cause of low necessities in food banks has been blamed on a hard economy that's hitting those even in the middle classes. A week ago George was on TV giving a speech on the strength of our present economy, grinning like the fool that he is. But then George doesn't grocery shop, nor does he stop to fill up the tank in his vehicle or his jet plane. He doesn't have to worry about supplying the White House with a winter's worth of fuel oil. All of this things, and more, have served to limit the numbers of normally generous donations to food banks by those who care. They still care but they can't afford to give.
Today I read a story about home foreclosures and discovered something I never knew about. Most of the homeowners, or rather former homeowners, in this situation have no where to go but shelters. Shelters do not welcome animals. So now pounds and animal shelters around the country are being deluged with family pets turned over by heartbroken owners who have no choice. These pets are being called 'foreclosure pets'. And it's Christmas. How do you break a child's heart when one of their best friends is facing several weeks in a cage or death by euthenasia?
Donations of toys for the children of underpriviled parents are falling way behind the normal numbers for this time of year. And we're not just talking the poor. This is a problem that has hit the middle classes as well. Donations of gifts for our troops has hit a new low for this time of year.
Governors of several states have decided to by-pass George's veto of health care for children by increasing their demands for Medicaid money from the federal government. However, due to George's many vetoes lately, these latest bids for more have been turned down by the feds. This signfies that we have more sick and fatally ill children now for the first time in the history of the U.S. who are without health care.
Everyone is hurting in some way, it seems. And now we're supposed to walk around with smiles and wish everyone a Merry Christmas or celebrate Kwanza and Hanukkah, not counting the other religious factions in this country. And how the hell can we when things are so bad all around? Do we pretend or is the truth of our situations so very bad and depressing that we can no longer force those plastic smiles and feign happiness?
I know I can't. God help us all.
