Pardon Me While I Refuse to Answer the Door

It is early morning, my youngest has gone to school and I lock myself into the office. The land line rings, (sometimes I turn the ringer off)I am deeply involved in the late 1800's. Moments later, I hear the cell chiming. My concentration is muddled but I persist and stay focused. Minutes later, a knock on the door, the dog barks as their knocking continues.
Poof, I am back to reality. I ignore the persistant knocking, they refuse to give up and come inside through the back door. These are not intruders, they are my closest friends and family. They want to chat, visit, drink coffee, etc.
I have hurt their feelings, offended them, by ignoring their calls. I apologize and explain. They don't understand. I am home. It's not like a have a "real" job. I do not have management hanging over my shoulder making sure they are getting their money's worth. I enforce my own deadlines, follow my own criteria.
I do enjoy their company. I have even tried adjusting my writing schedule to the afternoons. It didn't work, I get too distracted. What am I going to make for dinner? Did I pull out the chicken from the freezer? I need to start the laundry ... my daughter will be home from school in an hour ... sigh, it just didn't work for me.
What to do? What to do? I stop writing, temporarily, until they go one their merry way. Why, you ask? Why would you do that? Because, they are my friends and family and they are more important to me than my writing. I can put my work aside temporarily, I have that option. But life is too precious, my family and friends are too precious. I shall visit with them, while I can. Enjoy them while I can. They are my life.
