OUT IN LONDON

Zandra Rhodes hosted a sit down dinner for architect Michael Davis's 60th birthday. She cooked onion soup for about forty people in her penthouse apartment above her own museum in Bermondsey.
A spectacular Andrew Logan chandelier dripped into my soup bowl. It was so enormous, I found it hard to see the diners seated opposite me, the composer Richard Hartley, and Sir Robert Stephen's widow, the gregarious actress, Patricia Quinn, aka Lady Stephens.
After dinner, we all adjourned for champagne and deserts in the nearby Glass House, which Michael designed, and lives in with his sculptor partner, Andrew Logan.
One hundred and twenty of Michael's nearest and dearest attented the after-dinner party. A lot of old acquaintances whom I haven't seen since the Seventies, were all looking the same but older. Everyone had dressed up, especially a well-known film-director (father of two), who was wearing a long blonde wig and an evening gown.
Zandra wheeled on a couple of enormous, heart-shaped cakes adorned with the obligatory sixty candles. After everyone had finished exultantly singing 'Happy Birthday', and 'he's a jolly good Fellow', Michael sliced the cakes up with a huge carving knife. He then dropped his surprise bombshell. ' Andrew and I had a civil partnership ceremony at the local registry office this morning, after being together for thirty four years,' he announced. I hope Michael gets his birthday wish: permission from the Mayor to build a promenade alongside the south bank of the Thames in time for the Olympics.
For a horrible moment I thought I might have to stay the night, as I couldn't persuade a local cab in the vicinity of Tower Bridge to pick me up. A cab finally picked me up at 2.30 a.m. to take me home on the other side of the river. By this time, I was shattered, but the party was still in full swing when I managed to escape.
