What in the world is yoga?

OK...I got up this morning excited about going to work out. Last night, I went to hi/lo impact aerobics and even though I was sweating like a pig, and had to catch my breath many, many times, I still hung in there and completed the class. One lady even commented on how surprised she was that I stayed until the end because most "first timers" don't last a full 60 minutes.
So today after completing my meditation, I hit the gym again looking to do another aerobics class. I walked into the studio and saw two other people. They were stretching on mats. One was a man. I thought it was strange at first but then I thought since it's early in the day maybe a lot people don't come to this particular class.
Then the instructor walked in, got a mat and began to stretch too. Then I had to ask, "What class is this? Isn't this aerobics?" "No," said the instructor. "This is yoga."YOGA?!
Now, I've heard about yoga. I've seen books about yoga but NEVER have I been an active participant. While I was debating how to bow out gracefully, the instructor said, "Please stay and join us. I think you'll enjoy it." The lady beside me stopped stretching and also encouraged me to stay. OK...I was put on the spot. If I walked out I would look like I couldn't handle some simple twists, turns and stretches so I got a mat, took off my shoes and proceeded to follow instructions.
By the end of the class, I actually felt pretty good. The stiffness in my lower back was gone and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility. So that's what Yoga can do for you? Well, after we finished our final breathing exercises, I thanked the instructor (Donna was her name) and laughed about having to blog about this day.
Today I discovered the world of yoga and it's another notch in my quest to become physically fit by June.
