Our Yearly Oscar Picks
Ok it's that time of year again. In the very near future I will be walking to the podium to collect my Oscar for Best Actress. Meanwhile I'll be looking to see Ellen Page collect Best Actress award for 'Juno.' OK my artsy film loving colleagues disagree with me but that's what this is all about. I believe I and my collagues are just as good as those so called experts and oddsmakers who are usually wrong anyways. You people remember 1999 when 'Shakespeare in Love' upset 'Saving Private Ryan' for Best Picture and how about 2005 when 'Crash' beat out 'Brokeback Mountain' or the biggest upset of all time back in 1981 when 'Real People' was picked over 'Raging Bull?' (I still can't figure that one out). So anyways we should all expect No Country for Old Men to dominate like the experts said right? Just like we all know the Patriots blew out the Giants and Hillary has already wrapped up the Democratic nomination and will win in a landslide in November right? (I wonder what she will say in her concession speech when she bows out next month? Ok that's politics. I'll talk about McCain's chances against Obama later on).
Yes we're talking film now. Let me introduce my panel of esteemed colleagues just like the people we had last year. Moi of course your favorite struggling actress who moonlights as a waitress, Biff my on again off again boyfriend, Alocki my alien friend from Zatoris, and Mr Gabriel the noted film critic. Actually Biff you weren't here last year so glad to see you join us.

Fifi: Alright so now our opinions. I'm not morrally nuts about a teenager getting pregnant. I mean I would probably turn down the lead role for 'Juno' if it was offered to me, but the storyline in Juno is so much more entertaining than the other contenders and I just love Ellen Page. I mean isn't she so much like me? Also Knocked Up was truly the stinko movie of the year. Biff your opinions?
Biff: As usual Fifi you go against the grain. How can you vote for Tommy Jones over Daniel Day Lewis? Also Fifi we're living in the 00s. In Hollywood today 'morality type' stories are far and few and it's been like that the last forty years or so. Just look at the storyline and the storyline I like best is No Country for Old Man. Also I'm really rooting for the French actress Maron Cotillard to get Best Actress award. She was fantastic as Edith Pilaf. Finally Fifi Knocked Up may not satisfy your morality kick but I thought it was funny. Hillary Swank has to be nominated for worst actress this year with movies like PS I Love You and The Reaper.
Fifi: Alocki?
Alocki: I nominate Michael Clayton for Best Picture. Just extremely good acting combined with an interesting twisted plot. I am usually not a fan of 'lawyer/cop' type movies but this movie is an exception. I also agree with Biff that Maron Cotillard should win Best Actress award. Finally I have to agree with Biff one more time that this was not a great year for Hillary Swank. The Reaper was a thoroughly forgetable film.
Fifi: Mr Gabriel?
Mr Gabriel: Yes Fifi you're right when you say the 00s is truly a wasteland when it comes to quality in film and other entertainment. However I feel 2007 was a halfway decent year in movie making. First I want to mention there could have been a few other contenders for Best Picture this year. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly from France was just a tremendously well acted movie and should have been nominated for Best Picture ala Letters from Iwo Jima last year as opposed to Best Foreign Language Film. Are we just biased toward American/British/Canadian/Australian films in the Oscars? A few other candidates. I just cannot understand how The Savages was ignored and I'll tell you the truth, I liked 300. Yes there was Spartans fighting to rock music and all those special effects but I thought overall it was a well acted movie. I really would have no heartburn seeing it nominated for Best Picture. I think cases could have been made for Gone Baby Gone and Breach.
As for my pick I have to go with No Country for Old Men. Yes it's violent but it's also intense and exciting and Javier Bardeen plays one of the most vicious villans in cinema history. Great acting by rising up and comer Josh Brolin (loved his father in Marcus Welby) and your favorite actor Fifi, Tommy Lee Jones. Now for best actress I gotta go with Julie Christie in Away from Her. Remember this is the same actress we saw in Dr Zhivago forty years earlier. What a contrast in style. A tremedous job playing an Alzheimer's patient in this sad film. My stinko of the year is the awful awful I know who killed me starring Linsay Lohan. No plot whatsoever.
Fifi: Allright you people, that's our opinions. We'll see who the winners are tonight.
