The Apple is well documented from biblical times , but I wondered about when it came to the USA . Since I love apples in every way, but especially fresh, and I can't wait for mid October to go to Apple Hill in the mountains for my ultimate pleasure. Of course I come home with a bushel of mixed apples, mile high pie, cider, brandy, any thing else made of apples I dine on while there, which is from dawn until dark;-) Go ahead call me hog, when I go to apple Hill I am, and love it.;-)... The word apple comes from the Old English aeppel. It's been around since the Iron Age and was cultivated in Egypt. In the first century A.D., the Roman Pliny the Elder listed thirty-six varieties of apples. There are many mythological associations over various civilizations, with the apple in the Garden of Eden being the most widely-known. Apple trees can live for hundreds of years.
The apple was brought to the United States by the Pilgrims in 1620. The French brought the apple to Canada. The first commercial trade of apples from the U.S. began in 1741 on Long Island, NY, with the product being exported to the West Indies.
Apple orchards and brewers are mentioned as far back as the 8th century by Charlemagne. The first known Norman distillation was carried out by ‘Lord’ de Gouberville in 1554, and the guild for cider distillation was created about 50 years later in 1606. I
Out of the more than 7,000 varieties classified in the United States alone, most apples fall within a 50-variety category. The apple is native to Europe and Asia, and is now also grown worldwide in temperate regions. The United States produces approximately one-third of the world's crop.
Apples were brought to Vermont from neighboring states and Canada in colonial days. Settlers planted Fameuse apples around 1700 at historic Chimney Point on Lake Champlain.
Apples first found their way to Washington state in 1825 on a Hudson's Bay Company sailing vessel. In terms of total crop for both fresh and processed use, Washington grows between forty and fifty percent of this country's apples.There are 172,000 acres of orchards nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, at elevations of 500 to 3,000 feet above sea level.

Apple Brown Betty
Ingredients
2 cups soft breadcrumbs
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted butter or margarine
4 cups tart sliced apples (4 medium apples)
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
grated rind of 1 lemon
1/4 cup water at room temperature
Instructions
Preheat over to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C, gas 4.)
Mix the breadcrumbs with the salt and melted butter or margarine, and divide the mixture into three. Place one-third in a greased 1-1/2 quart baking dish.
Sprinkle your apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and grated rind, and toss to blend. Place one-half of this mixture on top of the crumbs in the baking dish. Add another one-third of the crumbs, then the remaining apples, and a final layer of crumbs. Trickle the water into the side of the dish to as not to moisten the top layer of crumbs.
Cover and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the cover and continue to bake until the apples are tender and the crumbs a delicious brown, perhaps another 20 or 30 minutes. Serve warm with cream or custard or top with a vanilla sauce.
Yield: 6 servings
