Marketing "The City of Gardens Collection" 6/27/2009 6:39:55 AM Marketing never stops. Once a book has been released, the real work starts. If no one knows who you are, what you do or if the book exists, you will never find success. You should know even before you write your book as to who your audience is. As for me, my audience is politicians, institutions and community leaders with relative interests to mental illness, addiction and homelessness.
Although the books are not of general interest to the public, the audience is still quite large. It is a select target which requires individual contact with those who are directly involved with making decisions concerning these issues.
By causing interest of the most prominent people, the word has a probability of being communicated throughout the office, institution and may eventually reach the general public. By contacting these people, I am looking for endorsements, financial support or partnerships concerning the seven book series.
Major institutions already have a large network in place and have the resourses required to to propel a publication into large circulation. These contacts can also give credibility to the book thus paving the way for future publications relative to the field.
Some of the reasons for contacting these people is to try to obtain contracts of support, credibility and future financing for the next book to be released.
Usually a free copy of the book will be sent to the potential contact for review. If approved, many doors may very well open. This may be very expensive, so you have to choose wisely as to who you need to send a free book to.
As for publicity, most effort and money should be spent in your own city. If successful, the media will pick up the story and the news will emminate quickly accross the nation at no added cost to you.
Personal contacts at home is the most effective. Putting a face to the name and cause is extremely important. Don't try to sell a book. Sell your name and the cause you believe in. Books will come and go, but a name can last forever.
