Living in Today's World
12/22/2005 4:41:04 AM
This time of year reminds me of something good going bad. By that I mean the idea of Christmas or Hanukkah has turned into a time of spending, buying, and the increase in debt with its inherent increase in stress. We see people with smiles on their faces while beneath those smiles lay the truth of their financial distress. Why do we do this each year? Are we so fragile of a society that the only way we can enhance our ego is to spend more each year? Whatever happened to tradition, hand made presents, and yes, a time of quite and solitude with ourselves each day.We now stand on a threshold whose doorway leads in a direction no other culture has seen. We can either choose to partake of the 'world of things' or we can once again embrace a 'world of inner harmony'. What got us in this position was the genius of the human mind. In a very short span of geologic time we have managed to plunder the earth's resources in ways unknown throughout history. We live in a world where one deranged person can kill millions in an instant with biologic or nuclear terror. Our 24 hour news media allows us to know instantly all the details of each others' lives. Our minds spin and our thoughts begin to jumble until we no longer can see or focus on any one path. We are a lost society. Lost in a dream gone bad and one in which we cannot seem to awaken. Each day as we stumble along our paths we get used to the numbness of conformity. In fact, we begin to see this warped world as normal and feel its pain as if we were meant to live within this ever present darkness. What is needed is a simple ray of light amid the darkness. Just one flame can ignite a new way of thought and bring about enormous change. It takes courage of unbelievable dimensions to change a view that has become comfortable and whose pain seems normal but change can occur. Change can occur by living a life of intent and integrity. Change can occur by remembering each day your determination to bring about a shift in your direction and thoughts. This Christmas Season lets begin by putting Christ's, Buddha's, Mohammed's, and your true spirit back into our various celebrations by allowing their teachings to spread into all the nooks and crannies of our lives. Each of them came to change the world and show it the direction in which to live. Each taught a simple truth that has become warped by ego and the need for ultimate power. Let's get back to the roots of our creation and love each other, care about each other, and live within that intent each day of our lives.
