Appreciating the Pause
6/23/2008 3:33:25 AM
For whom do we write, really? Is it an exhaustive exercise in self-expression, a simple search for the right combination in the name of fortune and fame, to leave a mark on the world, to reach out and touch someone, a particular someone, or a random lottery of whoever gets it?

Something responds from within to something on the outside. A reaction to life that in the creative gives birth to emotions which are brought forth into the world as words. When they are forcefully projected like so much vomit, the result can be an equally disturbing mess. But with a little calm and thought, the same emotions can be said in a more palatable manner, one that provokes thought instead of reaction.

Too often when we're fired-up about something, we just open our mouths and shout. Perhaps we should have an automatic duct tape dispenser that senses when we're about to explode and slaps a sticky silver film over our mouths so that we do not say something we later wish we hadn't.

The same goes with our writing. There's a reason for writing first drafts ... Sometimes it just doesn't come out right the first time around or the second or the third.

Today I pray to learn patience and finesse in my expressions, the fine art of taking a pause, so that I may heal with the power of communication instead of hack.
