Common Sense
6/22/2008 8:52:53 PM
The recent maritime tragedy in Philippine waters could have been avoided with a little more common sense.
Sometimes it takes just a little of what we take for granted as "common sense" to prevent tragedies that cost unnecessary
loss of lives.

The recent "accident" at Philippine seas is what I consider
a totally illogical result of maritime authorities' very bad
decision (or lack of it). How could a ship be permitted to
sail into heavy rain and threatening typhoon and carry 700 passengers aboard? The weather forecasts were clear enough, and the decision to make the trip was a "suicidal" move, at
the most.

The ship management offered the victims compensation but that does not acquit them of the grave responsibility for the lives lost. The coast guard on the other hand should have been more vigilant in patrolling our nations coastal waters and exercising their legal authority to stop these
stubborn vessels simply for the protection of the passengers themselves. Common sense dictates it.
