Mommies Alert: Don't Smoke!
10/16/2011 5:45:16 AM
An encouragement to pregnant women/women of childbearing years
Tobacco use is the leading MOST PREVENTABLE cause of disease and death. For pregnant women and women of childbearing years, it is especially important to quit if you have started, do not start if you haven't and to protect yourself (and unborn child) from the effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke.
Here's what you need to know:
1). Babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy have twice the risk of Sudden Death Syndrome (SIDS)
2). Prenatal exposure to secondhand smoke is also harmful to a child's mental development
3). Twenty to thirty percent of low birth weight can be attributed to smoking
4). Infants and children exposed to secondhand smoke may develop more respiratory problems such as bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, coughing, wheezing and worsened asthma.
Please protect you and your child by not smoking or allowing others to smoke in your home or car.
