lists ... 4/7/2004 6:27:54 AM turkeys, too-long in the beak, eggs, more eggs and work buns rising in the oven.
Wild Turkey: Not by the bottle, but in the form of the actual haughty bird. There are over 6-million wild turkeys in this world and about a dozen of them were in fine form in our back and side yards this morning, some merely poking and pecking about, some contemplating a short hop into the sky and over the neighbor's fence and some in full-blown display. P. and I witnessed this at sunrise, and I woke A. up to see same, taking photos and spreading corn along the way, in hopes that our guests return tomorrow morning.
Their beaks: Looked to be in good shape, but birds are showing up in Southeast Alaska with elongated beaks, nearly three-times their normal size, reducing the birds’ abilities to feed and preen and survive. Scientists aren’t sure why, but as always they are searching for an environmental/contamination/something just not right in the world cause … and we all know if there is something out there, its affecting all of us … animal, vegetable or mineral. Rock, paper, scissors. Game over.
The perfect hard-boiled egg: A. Buy them early. The older the egg, the better the boil and peel. B. Place cold eggs in a single layer in a saucepan just big enough to hold them. C. Add cold water to cover by one-inch. C. Cover the saucepan, and bring water to a boil over high heat. D. Remove from heat and let stand for 17 minutes for medium-sized eggs, 20 minutes for jumbo. E. Pour off water and put pan under cold running water for a minute or so, to stop further cooking.
I wish I could give reference and credit to this recipe, but it’s a clipping in our cooking scrapbook, tried and true, and works for excellent peeling and way less swearing under your breath when you grab up all those colored eggs to make deviled eggs for Easter dinner.
My eldest daughters have left the building, but each them came back and copied this recipe out of our cooking scrapbook.
No Job Available: It’s the status message on my digital loading screen from work this morning. Apparently, with my supersonic cable connection, I sucked all the work off last night, and now there is nothing left, for the time being. Time to read AD and catch up on other desk “stuff,” while boiling eggs, of course.
All Hell Breaking Loose: What the digital job load status screen will say in approximately 17 minutes, so I best get those eggs boiled.
