Life after Weight Loss Surgery
2/16/2006 9:16:47 AM
Feb. 15, 2006 was my 6 mos anniversary
Hello Everyone!

I am Post Op and living and enjoying life and can't believe this is me who is doing so well and making so much progress!

I am -85lbs, which is halfway to my goal, and I am doing fabulous! Yes I am anemic, but I was so before surgery, ral years before surgery..so despite my low blood numbers, my physicians are amazed at my energy levels & progress, and SO AM I!

Tuesday a nurse taking my blood pressure, asked what meds was I taking? HUH? My BP was 110/60. She sees I'm overweight still at 5-4" and 240. And I will say this again: EXERCISE MATTERS! AND its important to have fitness goals- be able to lift xx weights and being able to do xx mins Cardio..it all matters. When I worked out at the gym in '99, I was always told- you can have 2 people who weigh the same- say 200lbs, but the person who exercises - will have a lower BMI, higher metabolism & better health as a result..I am LIVING PROOF!

My Cardio used to be 30 mins at 1.0% incline and a "fast" 2.5/2.8 speed. That was all I could do - breathing wise and joint wise- I would also do some weight lifting- but I always had my knee joints hurting aftwerards..Even after losing 20lbs..NOW my treadmill is 60-70 mins, with inclines minimum at 3.0% to 7.0%, with minimum speed of 3.0..I might even try some slow running on the treadmill next..My body is adapting so wonderfully - its like I can't get enough..you see the success you make and you wanna keep going for it!
The endorphins kick in and you do get addicted to feeling so great! I also do boxing moves when Im doing Cardio..the other day My girlfriend overheard 2 guys who noticed me..One said "she must be a boxer- how would she know those moves?" LOL..I guess that means the guys WON"T be asking me out! LOL

I am happy to have had this surgery. I am in two support groups - one is my surgeon's group and the other is through Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, and open to everyone- regardless if you are RNY or a Lap Band patient, preop or postop and regardless who your surgeon is. THIS group happens to be a fabulous, loving, caring group..and regardless who you ask this question: WOULD YOU DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN? The answer is YES..Any Regrets? Answer is NO and I have had the pleasure of being exposed to more than one surgeons group of patients..Ive met Dr Adaniel many times and met many of his patients at an annual renunion he has, and everyone, regardless how far out they are from surgery, is happy to have it and really thankful for the changes it makes.

I have been taking pictures from a month prior/2 days prior/ 1 month post op, surgery etc ..and I have people who
look at me twice and do not recognize me..and these are patients and one was my surgeon. Medical Science only takes you so far- the rest is your trip- you are the driver! Think about it! Where do you want your body to take you next? And not everyone has Plastic Surgery as a result of this surgery..I have 2 friends-both 300+ lbs before surgery- and both have lost 172-176 lbs- NO KIDDING. Lisa wears a size 6
and Lindy wears sz 4-6- both flat stomachs and no PS. And they are not the only ones- just 2 that I know first hand.

Is this the easy way out? Absolutely NOT! I LOOK at my pictures and (now say) How did I exist with all that fat in my upper body or my thighs? I look at myself today - and can't believe its only SIX MONTHS to make this difference..
Took a whole 48yrs to feel this bad & the reversal occurs in such a short time! I have never lost 85lbs in my life (50 was the most in '99) And its not a cakewalk..I struggle with the correct balance of food, water, exercise and supplements just like if I was doing Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig.. But the fact that I feel SOOO wonderful- is better than any diet! My metabolism is 52% faster than normal for MY AGE!Im not crabby or TIRED (remember I have iron issues) and Im exercising 4-5 times a week - usually 2-3 hrs -I hit the pool and the sauna and I am happy..I am going to be 50 in July and I look 30 and I am going to have the best Summer celebrating my new self..my new LIFE.

This has always been about the road to health for me..I had no real illnesses before surgery- but I also have to ask- how many heart attacks did I save myself from by having this surgery? This was not a last ditch decision, this was a decision made because I thought I had exhasusted all other options..NOTHING else had worked long term for me..and I was tired of not participating in life and sitting on the bench..Im a person who LOVES life and Knows how to live it and I wanted that back again..My Vitality, strength, energy to make my day and not coast through life..No matter how many changes I made to myself,I was not happy and not happy with the way I was living.

Do I have any regrets? Possibly one. Not having done this sooner with Dr Garber & Dr Holover. These men are top notch
surgeons. They care, they are professional and you are in great hands. If you want to know more about them, here is their site: www.stopobesityforlife.com .

If anyone reading this - is contemplating this surgery- please contact me by email- I will be very happy to help you and answer questions. Life is Short - GO LIVE IT!
