Marianne MacDonald
8/17/2009 12:18:28 PM
Just a quick note on myself. TO GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE is now available. It has received several good reviews, and for those of you who like their mystery mixed with humor, I would recommend that you try to get a copy of it.

Our author for this month is Marianne Macdonald. Born in Canada, she now lives outside of London. She writes the Dido Hoare series which, I believe, now numbers eight books. The main character, Dido Hoare, runs an antiquarian book store with the help of her father Barnabas. She is also the unwed thirty-something mom to Ben. Dido also has a sometime boyfriend Paul who is with Scotland Yard, and some of the stories involve her on-again, off-again involvement with police authorities.

The plots play fair with the reader and often there is a surprising twist at the end. But as with all books based firmly on the character of the protagonist, it depends on whether you like spending time with Dido. Although her domestic chores can slow down the plot at times, she has the intelligence and cool demeanor that would be required of someone who solves crimes, and she is generally fun to be with. I would recommend picking one up and giving it a try. If you like one you will probably like them all.
