Woodstock 9/6/2008 7:11:38 AM Birthday wishes and sweet memories of the "Summer of Love".
September 6th is my 46th birthday. It has been an exceptional year in terms of loss and gain, with a slight advantage in the gain column. Financially and emotionally it has been rocky; I am so well named, but I survived it. The advantage has been the discovery of some new friends here, and the re-discovery of some old ones elsewhere. Strangely, some of my oldest friends have taken to vanishing into thin air and obviously are doing a Harry Houdini act, having escaped from my life for the time being. Call me; you know who you are… Believe me this is no way to treat a friend. There is nothing I wanted for my birthday that money could buy. My happiness is under construction, but all the links still work! Thanks to all of the writing and the amazing people here, it has been a year of personal growth and quiet reflection. Since Mariatu, Bridget’s nurse from Sierra Leone has returned from maternity leave, I was able to leave the house a little while today and so I walked up the street and got a haircut. When I got home, I updated my bio picture with a new one. Musically I was in the mood to hear something from the 60’s, so I listened to Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” a psychedelic take on Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of “Alice in Wonderland.” I still love it. It reminds me of my dearly departed older sister Penny who passed recently. She was a flower child during the “Summer of Love” in 1969 and I always looked up to her. My mom used to take us to Piedmont Park in Atlanta where every weekend they had live bands playing outside. To us it was like Woodstock. I remember Shakespeare being performed in the park at night, French fries, corn dogs, the lake, Frisbees flying everywhere; and the cops who were riding on horseback through the crowd, arresting the fringe clad hippies smoking pot. For a seven year old it was magical! Here’s to the best year of my life. I couldn’t have imagined heaven being any better than my memories of that summer. Gosh I miss it and my sis. Peace and Love to you all.
