Serving in Vietnam Earned Benefits 5/18/2008 5:49:18 PM VA Health Care, but many in America and China do not have health care. Blog Entry for May 18, 2008
Today’s entry is about health care and will be brief since most of my efforts went into the companion piece that I just posted to Articles.
When I retired at sixty, two years ago, after thirty years of teaching, I had no medical coverage and thought I would have to wait a few years until I qualified for medical care.
Luckily, I was eligible for medical care under the VA. I didn’t know that when I retired. I found out by accident from someone my wife and a friend talked to one day while out looking at houses.
So, today, I have the best medical care in America. The reason I have that medical care is because after I turned eighteen, I joined the United States Marines and soon after boot camp ended up in Vietnam a field radio operator in the First Marine Division stationed in Chu Lai, Vietnam. I risked death and injury for one tour in combat zone came home having no idea that risking my life for my country made me eligible for health care. More than four decades later, that time in Vietnam paid off.
However, many American citizens, and Chinese citizens for that matter, do not have health care. That is what my article is about. If you are interested, I invite you to read that posting over in that other category.
Also, if you or anyone you know, is planning on attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I suggest you have them read the medical care piece too.
By the way, the VA does not cover my dental care, and I have a dental appointment Monday, tomorrow, that may cost a lot. I can only hope that I saved enough to cover this expected and unplanned for expense.
