Teach In Nostalgia 1/16/2009 3:39:27 PM Time to demand fair play at the university Those good old days of campus teach ins conducted by self righteous moral relativists apparently have not disappeared. You remember the sweet flower children who romanticize the enemy while reviling the democratic and pluralistic home that indulged their excesses. They are alive and pining away at your local university. They are older and much grayer but as misguided as ever. In fact they are “educating” our kids on the public tab using our fat tuition dollars to present their world view.
Don’t fret. These self described intellectuals don’t waste a moment of their precious time offering the kids another point of view. After all they are pure and they know best. They are world citizens who will not be encumbered by the traditional notion of a balanced presentation. They need not search for truth or wisdom because they are the sole reservoir of wisdom and truth. How could they feel any other way? They mean well.
You remember those good old days. Harvard professor Timothy Leary tripping on acid, John Lennon composing the mindless but beautiful “Imagine” and millions of students enamored by a butcher named Ho Chi Min.
While John McCain was being tortured on a daily basis by communist thugs our “intellectuals” on campus were calling our troops murderers and rapist. Young men who had put their lives on the line were assaulted by middle aged women with umbrellas, regularly spat upon and generally treated as outcasts. Hollywood produced a score of films, all fictional, portraying American soldiers in the ugliest of lights to reinforce the myths encouraged on campus.
What a time! Well I stepped back into that same illustrious culture of well meaning useful idiots at San Diego Sate University on the afternoon of January 15th. This time the subject was not Vietnam and the communist killers but Hamas and the suicide murderers. Different subject but same moral confusion.
I had the good fortune to watch three very soft, smart, well informed middle aged academics display their fractured moral compasses for better than two hours. They presented a unanimous affirmation of moral equivalency in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Don’t worry none of the three saw any significant distinction between the side whose very existence is pledged to the extermination of the other and the side that bends over backwards to protect innocents on both sides. No distinction was made between the side that teaches peace to it kids at school, in it’s media, and in temple verses the side that preaches hate in it’s text books, in it’s media and from it’s pulpits. The three brilliant academics at this “teach in” saw no relevant distinction between the two sides. After all both sides have done wrong so no need to nit pick concerning the differences between a democratic pluralistic nation that honors women and respects gays verses a thugocrocy that produces honor killings, suicide bombers, subjugates woman, stones gays to death and punishes protest by dragging the protestors into the street and beating them to death.
After all these are just cultural differences among the plethora of cultures that deserve our respect. Don’t ever consider these cultural differences as an indication of the moral superiority of one side over the other. Again one must remember Israel is not perfect so we can’t say one side is better than the other.
If for any reason you detect a moral, ethical or economical reason to find fault with our kids being educated in such a way, you might want to call the political science department at San Diego State and demand equal time for you and your kids. You may even refuse to donate a dollar or consider withdrawing your kid from such a place. But that would mean you believed in fair play and were able to ferret out the difference between moral imperfection and evil. These however are very old fashion concepts that find their roots in the Judeo-Christian values that founded the most generous, prosperous and free nation in history. Moral clarity? What a silly idea to present at a university.
