Season of Change
9/30/2008 3:04:28 PM
Fall is a time for change . . .
How much change can a person take at one time? Right now I am experiencing changes in my personal and professional life, add the political and economic changes and uncertainties, and it’s getting to be a bit much.

I don’t think of myself as a harbinger of doom, a pessimist or negative by nature, but I think of that old commercial about taking a relaxing bubble bath, “Calgon take me away!” In less than three weeks my daughter’s wedding will have come and gone. Of course we’re heavily immersed in last minute details and it seems there just isn't enough time left to get everything done. The Big Day will come and my beautiful daughter and her handsome fiancé will be married, ready or not.

Work has its mix of ups and downs and I have decisions to make in that department. And you all know what the nightly, hourly, minute by minute news programs have to offer.

Fall is my favorite time of year. I associate it with new beginnings: start of the school year, end of summer and a gradual intro to winter, a winding-down time, a time for reflection and planning for Christmas and the new year. But this year I haven’t had time to relax, reflect or plan. Unread books sit on my bedside table, my grandson’s Halloween costumes aren’t ready, my blinds are dusty and the windows are spotty. I am chronically behind.

In five weeks we will have elected a new president; millions of voters will be happy and millions will not. And where are we headed? Will our economy take a dive, stabilize or sputter forward and back like a Model T? Every day I take phone calls from people who are fearful of the uncertain times, these times of change. Normally I am calm, at peace this time of year, but with all that’s on my mind, I can’t wait for this feeling of unease to pass. Bet I’m not alone.
