Man's Broken Relationship with God

What is mankind's relationship to his creator? How can we know?

The only way to discover man's relationship with God is through his word. God tells us plainly what our relationship is to him.

• Genesis 1:27-28, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

From the beginning of man's existance God gave him dominion over all creatures of the earth under God's direct guidance. Man even had direct fellowship with the Lord God his creator! (Genesis 2:19)

It is in this world of love and fellowship that the Lord God created woman from Adam's rib and gave him his wonderful mate and instituted marriage (Genesis 2:21-25).

The Bible does not give an exact period of time that man and woman lived in bliss in the Garden of Eden, and in the fellowship with the Lord God; but, it does tell of a catastrophic event that would forever change man's relationship with the Lord his God.

What event changed man's relationship with his creator?

• Genesis 2:15-17 gives insight, "And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of the tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

God gave Adam one commandment, and one commandment only.

• "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it:" (Genesis 2:17)

This single commandment which the Lord God had given Adam was so easy to obey that Adam simply had to do "nothing" to demonstrate his love, devotion, and obedience to his creator. God actually made obedience easier than disobedience.

God did not require man to do great feats to please him, just simple obedience. To disobey God would take a deliberate, willful act by Adam.

What is the consequence of disobedience?

• "for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Genesis 2:17)

Death is the price of disobedience!

What is death?

• Psalms 49:16-19 give a clue. "Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased, For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light."

God makes two things clear about death.

• Nothing good can be taken into death.
• There is complete darkness.

Death is complete darkness of soul and complete separation from the goodness of God from a person's life.

• Matthew 22:13 confirms, "Then said the king to the servants, bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Why must man be separated from the Lord his God?

• Revelation 4:8 gives a glimpse into heaven itself to reveal the answer. "And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come."

The answer is obvious. God who is Holy cannot have fellowship with unholy man. Man had sinned and become sinful; unholy.

• Romans 5:12, "Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."

Can we blame Adam for our sins?

Psalms 14:1-3, "The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no not one."

Romans 3:10-12, "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

Every man has sinned and is responsible to God for his own sin!

How exactly did Adam die that day?

• Genesis 3:7-8, "And the eyes of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden."

God did not need to tell man that their communion and fellowship were broken. Man's eyes were opened and he knew he had sinned. Man now had an evil heart of unbelief. He no longer believed in God's love and mercy.

• Jeremiah 17:9 confirms, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

• Jesus also agrees in John 2:24-25, "But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man."

Because of sin, God could no longer allow his Holy Spirit, which is God's eternal breath of life, to reside in man. And in its place, God put a worldly, temporal spirit into man.

• Ecclesiastes 3:11 witnesses, "He hath made everything beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end."

• Psalms 51:10-11, "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me."

• I Corinthians 2:11, "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."

Mankind indeed died spiritually that day. And the worldly spirit that God allowed could not stop death, but only forestall for a short time the inevitable physical and soul death that must follow.

• "Then the spirit will return to God who gave it, the body will return to the earth from which it came," (Ecclesiastes 12:6-7), "and the soul of the sinner shall suffer indignation, and wrath, and tribulation, and anguish," (Romans 2:8-9)

This is the condemnation that awaits all mankind - for that all have sinned.

(Do not despair. Next, we look at man's purpose in life, and God's provision for mankind.)
