Fighting CPS 6/24/2012 1:56:49 PM The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Occasionally, I will report helpful tips and web sites with advice on fighting CPS.

Some People are Trying But . . .
Earlier this spring, a rather strange case began in Conroe, Texas. Two children ages five and eleven had been found in a filthy bus-converted-to-home out in a wooded area. The parents had planned to live in the converted bus until they built a home on the property, but both ended up in jail (unfortunately I didn’t save the original articles on why the two were in jail). They had made provisions for the children’s care with a sixty-year-old aunt who then became “overwhelmed” caring for the kids and working twelve hours a day. (I’m wondering, Aunt, why didn’t you reach out for help? Teachers and neighbors, didn’t you wonder anything?)
When the children were found, finally, they were placed in foster care. The mother was released from prison a few weeks ago and began the arduous process of trying to reclaim her children. She has completely cleaned up the bus, installed toilet facilities and an air conditioner, bunk beds, a double bed, desk and computer and TV. A stove and refrigerator are hooked up in a small wooden shack near by. CPS still considers the place unsafe for children to inhabit, so Mom is hoping for some benefactor to supply a mobile home. Mom is allowed to visit the kids and it’s been reported that they show a strong bond with her. She sees them as often as possible and talks to them every night on the phone at their foster home.
Latest report (Houston Chronicle, May 3, pg. B-2) is the judge in the case has paved the way for Mom to recover her children. She must find a job, do more with the bus—or get a mobile home or something—and complete other tasks. (I’ll bet her “family plan” has almost the exact same words that our daughter and son-in-law’s did.) I wish this mother much luck. She seems to be trying.
My prayers have changed of late. Now I ask on a daily basis, “Lord, please be with all children. Rescue those who are abused. Let those whose parents are innocent return to them.”
