New Resources For Health Educators and Home School Parents
Monday, December 05, 2011  5:16:00 PM

by Jan Crossen

Education/Training
Health educators and students and home school parents and children have new resources which help students analyze and evaluate the impact of real-life influences on their health, lives, families, and community.

The 9 LIVES Trilogy, a Moms’ Choice Award Winning Young Adult Series, is raising awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and opening minds and dialogues to prevent teen alcohol and drug abuse.  Through these companion books, The 9 LIVES Trilogy: Learning Opportunity Guide (Teachers’ and Students’ Editions), students analyze and evaluate the impact that their choices and behaviors have on their health and lives, and the potential impact on their parents, future children, and community.

Students explore themes such as: tolerance, diversity, bullying, special needs, foster care, adoption, love, respect, cultural heritage, family, traditions, sportsmanship, self-esteem, volunteerism, and community.  They practice reading and retention, vocabulary building and spelling, geography and math skills.  They broaden their knowledge of African American history and gain practical skills and information for keeping themselves and others safe and healthy.

The Learning Opportunity Guide Teachers’ Edition provides middle school teachers and home schooling parents with a variety of activities designed to meet behavioral objectives in eighth grade health education as established by the State of Washington.  Methodologies include: group discussion, independent study, partner and group projects, films, Internet searches, interviews, practicum experiences, physical activities, guest instructors, and community service.
