Neuron-Like Computer Hardware Finally Gets Software
Over the last few years, engineers have proposed a number of arcane materials, such as graphene or quantum computer chips, as alternatives for the silicon chips that run modern computers. With the development of actual software to go along with the futuristic hardware, circuit components called memristors have now taken the lead in the race to replace silicon. Even more promisingly, memristors behave like neurons in many ways, allowing scientists to use this software to create a kind of digital brain.

Cyber war- Pro-WikiLeaks cyber army gains strength; thousands join DDoS attacks
The retaliatory attacks by pro-WikiLeaks activists are growing in strength as hackers add botnets and thousands of people download an open-source attack tool, security researchers said today. In recent days, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have been launched against several sites, including those belonging to Amazon, MasterCard, PayPal and the Swiss payment transaction firm PostFinance, after each terminated WikiLeaks accounts or pulled the plug on services

Self-healing autonomous material comes to life
Now, researchers at Arizona State University have created a material that may be able to not only sense damage in structural materials, such as cracking in a fiber-reinforced composite, but to even heal it. The aim of developing "autonomous adaptive structures" is to mimic the ability of biological systems such as bone to sense the presence of damage, halt its progression, and regenerate itself.

The 70 Online Databases that Define Our Planet
Researchers want to create the “Living Earth Simulator” to mine economic, environmental and health data to create a model of the entire planet in real time. But one of the dangers from such an approach is that any ethical issues are likely to be swamped by this tidal wave of numbers.

Google Earth for the body
Google has just launched its latest browser experiment. Google Body Browser shows an interactive detailed 3D model of the human anatomy that includes multiple layers, such as the circulatory and nervous systems and the skeleton and muscles. It works like Google Maps, with special tools for viewing different types of body systems (nervous system, circulatory system, etc.), adding text, etc. You can send a link to any images you create by simply emailing the URL that currently shows in the browser address bar.

New US military computer made from nearly 2,000 PlayStation consoles
The new computer, which has been named the Condor, was created from the gaming devices at the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in New York State in a bid to create a cost effective and green alternative to conventional technology. The Condor consists of a cluster of 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3 processors fused with high-end technology to create a device which is 50,000 times faster than the average consumer laptop.

Artificial Intelligence Advances in Military Ranks
Today, the military primarily uses AI to process large amounts of information, including videos, signals and intelligence that must be deciphered and analyzed quickly. As developments in AI continue, these tasks may seem almost menial. “A robot would be able to recognize, from the activities its video cameras capture, what the people it’s observing are doing,” explains Dr. Raymond Perrault, director, Artificial Intelligence Center, SRI. “It can tell you that someone is walking through the door, or that two people have met and exchanged a package or that a person is digging a hole by the side of the road.” A robot like this with sensors could decide what information is pertinent and report the data to a group of warfighters.
