E.L. Farrell's WordStage Poetry Lounge
is held from 7-9pm every second Saturday of the month at Barnes & Noble Bookstore Cafe (Across from Virginia Center Commons Mall) - Richmond, VA. The next date is Sept. 13, 2003. The event is free and open to the public and hosted by International Author & Poet, Éric L Farrell, Winner of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam.
WordStage is a culturally diverse meeting spot where "the voice of the people gets heard" as Richmond's most talented poetry and spoken word artists perform and share the thoughts and feelings. This open-mic poetry event, and has found success in B&N's bookstore setting with it's one golden rule, "No Profanity - We Be Creative!"
WordStage generally attracts ages 18-30, but has lent the mic to poets as young as 8 and as old as 72 and many poets have performed for the first time ever. WordStage Lounge is also known for it's monthly themes and the occasional appearance by guest Authors and seasoned poets. The Lounge opened on September 14, 2002 and will celebrate it's One Year Anniversary this year on September 13, 2003. September's theme, "Unity," will be well fitting for what WordStage has brought to Richmond's diverse community. One poet says, "I liked the atmosphere and crowd so much, I proposed to my fiancee there in February" -Will Holmes, Jr. - Author of "Seeking Solace: In a Time of Distress" (Dec. '03)

Comment on WordStage or the poets: What can I say? E...you're doing ya thang bruh! I was at WordStage from the beginning, and I'm glad I've had the chance to see it grow, and to see E grow as a host/MC. It's opened a door for shy poets to show their talents, and experienced poets to "tell us what they're thinkin' bout." The atmosphere is relaxed and the poets are not just good, but they are entertaining...and not just entertaining, but they have something to say...and for the poets -- the love and respect from the audience is there...so, whenever I'm in town and can come through..I'M there. (Did I mention I liked the atmosphere and crowd so much, I proposed to my fiancee there in Feb. '03?!?!). Keep the good vibes flowin' E!

Comment on WordStage or the poets: I just wanted to express my joy at being able to be apart of such a wonderful organization. My first visit last winter was a complete shock; I was expecting the snobbish, half-hearted amatuer poets that one would find in the vicinity of a suburban mall. What I found were strong, welcoming, passionate poets that spoke to my heart with their faith, (sometimes lack thereof), experience and emotion. The positive and uplifting atmosphere of the host, the poets, and the audience gives every poet (even shy ones like me) the voice they need to be heard.
*God Love and Sustain Ya'll* :)
WordStage has even taken the show on Tour a few times to welcome others into the Richmond Community.

Comment on WordStage or the poets: When the Wordstage Tour came to Mary Washington College in April, it was so live that we are still talking about it! And now we are hooked. Thanks for the positive vibes, they go on and on beyond the stage.
