| The GOT GUILT? contest, which has been boosting sales of GUILT ever since its inception, is causing such a stir that M J Rose covered it in this week's WIRED column (www.wired.com) |
"Got guilt? Author Emma Kaufmann wants to know what you're guilty about and invites you to unload it at her "Guilt Dump" and to enter the "Got Guilt?" contest.
It's all part of the promotion the author is doing to introduce Guilt -- a psychological thriller about several characters suffering from, you guessed it. And as far as promotions for novels go, this one seems to be pressing a lot of buttons. Kaufmann is receiving hundreds of entries a day.
"I feel guilty for writing this when I should be studying for the World's Most Boring Geology Text for my exam next week," wrote one entrant.
"I feel guilty for reading about the Meg Ryan-Dennis Quaid divorce, because it's none of my business and a waste of my time," wrote another.
Not all the entries are humorous. One war veteran wrote about missing a plane to Khe Sanh, Vietnam, during the 1971 campaign. He was supposed to replace a soldier who was returning home, but because he was a day late, the soldier had to stay one more night.
"My guilt is deep-seated and long-lasting," he wrote. "That night, the enemy attacked and the tank he was on, the one I was suppose to be on, was hit with a rocket-propelled grenade. All on board were killed, and the tank reduced to a burnt-out cinder. When I saw that the next day upon my arrival, I was devastated."
Kaufmann said she is surprised how many people seem to find relief from sending in their guilt trips and thank her for letting them get it off their chest. She hopes in the process they decide to buy her novel.
Even if it is out of guilt."
