Sam Penny was present to receive the award of Honorable Mention for Best Science Fiction novel of 2004 for his novel Broken River at the Darrell Awards at MidSouthCon 23 on April 3, 2005.

The yearly Darrell Awards focus on science fiction works that pertain to Memphis and the Deep South.
