Sam Perry, the 'nice guy' who had Oprah Winfrey crying on his shoulder and appeared also with Rev. Jesse Jackson weeping behind him on national television Nov. 4, the night Barack Obama became the nation's first African-American president, will be on The Oprah Winfrey Show today. He's being called the "human hankie" by mainstream media, but "he seems like a kind guy who will take it in stride," said one of the bloggers who noticed Perry on CNN in the massive crowd at Chicago's Grant Park celebration.
The Harvard graduate and Menlo Park venture capitalist contributed to President Elect Obama's outstanding campaign and was also the communications director for Obama's Silicon Valley office, reports mainstream news outlets. But blogger and writer Nordette Adams noticed the buzz about him online shortly after she saw Perry with the weeping Winfrey and Jackson on CNN.
"I thought, how long will it be before people want to know his name?" she said.
Adams was also following the election night results thread at BlogHer, where she is a contributing editor but it didn't register with her that Perry had been identified in the thread November 4, before The Chicago Sun Times wrote about him Nov. 6, until later when she heard his name on an entertainment news show.
"It's a cute human interest story," said Adams, "which is why I detailed the revelation more at my own blog. One of BlogHer's co-founders ID'd Perry, and then another reader followed her with pictures. It made me say, you know, I still love mainstream media, but social media rocks! It helps up feel more connected," she said.
"I think this election's made me a political junkie," she added.
