Allen Von Kanel Wins "Soldier of the Year"

Allen Von Kanel, son of author Danny Von Kanel, was awarded the "Soldier of the Year" Award this week.

Allen Von Kanel won out over four other soldiers chosen by their units in Kuwait as "Soldier of the Year". Allen has distinguished himself while in Kuwait and Bagdad.

Allen is with the 461st Personnel Support Division. He has unloaded mail, been security for convoys into Bagdad, guarded oil wells, and served at security checkpoints.

He is also up for an award for rescuing an Iraq child with heat stroke. Allen gave her an IV and took her to the hospital.

Allen is married to Cathryn Tanner Von Kanel and has two children, Kaylie and Blake. Allen has been in the area since April of 2003 and will be there until April 2004.
