Mystery Newsletter Reviews Fast Track
Lark Chadwick comes home from her waitressing job in Madison, Wisconsin, one night to find her Aunt Annie has committed suicide. At least that’s the police verdict. Lark is not convinced. Annie had no reason to kill herself and her room has been ransacked. In addition, Annie had been alarmed by something she found while going through her late father’s papers. Could she have found something there that got her killed? Annie had raised Lark from a baby, after her parents were killed in an accident, and Lark realizes she knows very little about her own background, or that of her parents, or of the accident that killed them. She quits her dead-end job and sets out to reconnect with her past.

In her hometown, Lark discovers that her parents died in a train accident. She wangles an assignment with the local newspaper to write about this twenty-four year old tragedy and, under the mentorship of the paper’s publisher, learns to be a journalist. Her investigation into her parents’ death uncovers old crimes that have a dangerous relevance to the present.

Author John DeDakis is a former White House correspondent and now an editor/writer for Wolf Blitzer at CNN. In this first novel, he shares his knowledge of journalism as Lark learns about interviewing techniques and journalistic integrity. He also shares a personal memory by recreating VERY exciting and compelling train-car confrontations.

Interestingly, this softcover version of FAST TRACK is published in an innovative new format that reduces the original 300-page book into an unabridged 100-page magazine with text in two easy-to-read columns.
