Tuning in and studying your body is what baby boomer author and expert Beverly Mahone is encouraging women to do as they enter the stage of life called menopause. “If you know what’s going on and why you’ll have a better understanding of how to cope with the emotional and physical changes menopause brings about,” says Ms. Mahone.
The author of Whatever! A Baby Boomer’s Journey Into Middle Age is offering a number of free reports on her website based on her own personal experiences and research. “I’m not a doctor,” she admits, “so I won’t give you a lot of psycho-babble about what ails you. What I offer is information from the perspective of the average woman who is experiencing many of the same symptoms other women are dealing with.”
During her “I’m still Hot…it just comes in Flashes now!” summer book tour, Ms. Mahone says she’s been advocating the importance of exercise and eating healthy in order to meet menopausal symptoms head-on. “I’ve met many women who are dealing with a lot of midlife personal and professional drama. Some are unhappy in their marriages and their jobs. Others are stressed out from taking care of their elderly parents. They feel trapped with no way out. I tell them I was where they are and how I’m coping. That gives them hope.”
Ms. Mahone says the main issues women write her about are weight gain, hot flashes, depression and low libido/vaginal dryness. These are all symptoms the baby boomer expert says she can identify with because she has suffered as well. “The women I’ve come in contact with are eager to hear what I have to say on the various subjects. And then are some who just want to share their experiences. They want to know someone is listening to what they have to say.”
