Kathleen Cunningham Guler’s characters are on an unstoppable quest and so are her fans in sweeping up copies of her spectacular second novel, In The Shadow Of Dragons, already going into its second printing. As Book 2 of the four-part Macsen’s Treasure series, it continues the story of 5th century Celtic Briton Marcus ap Iorwerth and his wife Claerwen, begun in its equally absorbing predecessor, Into The Path Of Gods. No high-tech heat-seeking gadgets for these two; their only tools are wits, courage and sometimes just plain audacity.
Midwest Book Review gives the book high acclaim: “Compelling, entrancing, and highly recommended … Kathleen Guler continues her superb blend of Dark Age Celtic myth and Arthurian legend…the kind of book so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!” Library Journal calls the book: “…a richly detailed Arthurian adventure.”
Guler’s haunting tale begins when the mysterious druid Myrddin Emrys, known in legend as Merlin the Enchanter, summons iron-willed spy Marcus ap Iorwerth and his beloved wife Claerwen to unearth and destroy yet another conspiracy against the high king. They soon discover that the youngest son of an earlier and well-hated king is allied with dreaded Saxon mercenaries and readily poised to reclaim his father’s throne.
Before Marcus and Claerwen can spoil his plans, a second conspiracy of personal revenge closes in on them. Falsely declared fugitives by the very ones they had sought to help, they become trapped in a labyrinthine intrigue between their accusers and the traitors. In a desperate race against time, they must endure hardship and profound personal loss, while pushing Britain towards freedom, peace and the future that would become King Arthur’s golden reign.
Acclaimed Arthurian scholar Geoffrey Ashe, author of The Discovery of King Arthur, praises Guler’s work: “Modern revelations of what King Arthur’s Britain was really like, in the aftermath of Roman rule, have inspired many fictional treatments. But Kathleen Cunningham Guler, portraying a deeply troubled time when Arthur was prophesied but not yet come, succeeds in finding a new approach… This is a very original story, carefully researched and skillfully written.”
Besides the Macsen’s Treasure series, the author has published numerous historical articles and essays as well as short stories, poetry and reviews. She has studied Celtic history and Arthurian legend in both Great Britain and the United States. A descendant of the Celtic nations of Wales and Scotland, she is currently working on the third novel of this series.
